WPF Screensaver Flittrbook from MIX07

Microsoft Technical Evangelist Karsten Januszewski blogs about his WPF Screensaver he created that is installed and running on all the MIX07 PC's called Flittrbook. As many of you probably already know - WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is built in to Windows Vista which allows for some really amazing things that can be done with applications.

Flittrbook is a WPF mashup of Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook all in to one really cool screensaver. Karsten worked with Tim Aidlin who is a designer at Microsoft to design all the neat visualizations you see in the screensaver. The screensaver is configured to pull MIX07content from Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook but has customization features to pull any content from these three services.

Here is a little video demo of the screensaver in action!

Karsten has put online some of the screensaver bits for download. However he was unable to include Facebook support in this release and there seems to be some issues with the Twitter feed being flakey. This is "definitely v.0.0.0.1" as Karsten notes. Give the screensaver a try and make sure you send in feedback for Karsten! I installed it and love it.

To install the bits, just download the .zip file and extract its contents. Inside you need to find the .scr file and righ-click to install the screensaver on to your PC.

Thanks to Nathan Weinberg over at InsideMicrosoft for pointing this out earlier today.

Demo of the screensaver? Well, I've got a minute to kill, let's have a look... could be cool... could be "wow"! Oh... what's this?

"That e-mail address, xxxxx, is not registered for the beta." (BTW, thanks for sending my email address around in the clear)

What beta? I don't want to register for a beta. I can't even see that I can even if I wanted to. I just clicked play! I just want to see your nice video.

    What's Soapbox? Do I care? Should I care? <sigh>

IOW, why put up something in a format that presents a barrier to inspection?

It's like approaching a nice looking dog only to have it bare its teeth and growl just as you bend down to pat it...

Plus ca change, plus c'est la merde chose.

Uncharitable I accept, but I'm a new Vista user, who, having misguidedly picked up that dog from the pound is now backed into a corner throwing biscuits to the beast that won't let me live in my own space without barking every time I move.

    Great guard-dog, lousy friend.

And I don't have Ultimate either, and the differential product offerings are both strange and annoying... and... and... and...

And I want my life back... I did have one, didn't I?

And all because a video of a screensaver wouldn't play... jeez! I should get out more...

Maybe if the damn dog would let me past?

    Ah :(

    Walkies?
