Windows Vista releases to manufacturing

Great news!  Today we’re announcing the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Vista.

Yes, you read it right -- development of Windows Vista is complete.

Want proof?  Watch this video and hear it from Jim Allchin himself.

Ultimately, we never could have achieved this milestone without you, the enthusiast community, who have played a key role in making this the highest-quality, most secure, most reliable and most usable version of Windows the world has ever seen.  You gave us unprecedented support in testing and providing your feedback while we designed, developed and refined Windows Vista -- so much so that it has in many ways become a reflection of your involvement.

Consequently, you should feel the same sense of accomplishment that we feel today.

And just what is this so-called RTM?  It’s the major milestone where we can confidently say that Microsoft is done with Windows Vista and will be handing it off to our industry partners:  PC makers, ISVs and IHVs.  They in turn will continue to ramp-up in earnest now that the target is locked -- for example, by refining hardware drivers -- in order to complete the cycle and make Windows Vista available via retail channels on 30 January 2007.  On that date Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system will be available to customers around the world.

But before we get there, we’ve got some really, REALLY great things to come, much of which will be disclosed or discussed on this blog -- so keep your eyes peeled!

I wonder what the really, REALLY great things to come are.  I am not sure I can wait until January 30th to purchase Vista.  A REALLY great thing would be an RTM CPP!  I would be all for that.

  22. Posted on: November 15, 2006 at 8:46AM

I've been daily checking MSDN for subscriber download of this...isn't it supposed to be available within 7 days of RTM?

Any ETA on when MSDN subscribers can get their paws on a copy ?  :)

  23. Posted on: November 15, 2006 at 11:30AM

Hey jtreefrog:  keep an eye on the blog, I'll let you know as soon as I do!

  24. Posted on: November 16, 2006 at 6:35AM

I have a question, any pre order options? I can't find it anywhere on the site, if there is.

In Addition, this will be my first time upgrading Multiple computers on a network... I need a guide for a way to purchase licenses for each machine without buying multiple boxes.  URL pls?

    Thanks, can't wait till 2007!

I've like to attend the launch, but I see no schedule online.  Is it something that's being skipped on this release?  By the way, I have been beta testing and see MANY issues with this system that I feel should be corrected prior to me recomending its deployment on production workstations.

Hey bahbahthelamb:  you'll want to see what launch events are occurring in your area by checking out the microsoft.com site dedicated to your country or region.

Hey vmercader:  Here's a link to the multiple-license program in existence for Windows XP:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.mspx.  If we were to offer something similar for Windows Vista (nothing of the sort exists as of yet), you can rest assured that we'd make mention of it on this blog :)

    Hi Nick,

Please Help me get the drivers for the following OS:

    1. Windows Vista x86 {Windows Vista Business/Vista Home Basic/Vista Home Premium/Vista Ultimate}

    3. Windows XP Professional x64

The HP System that I'm using is a Compaq Presario V3133AU Notebook. The Drivers provided by the HP Website : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=in&dlc=en&product=3279727&lang=en& : could not be installed on any of the Operating Systems above, So please provide me with the appropriate Drivers.

    Thanks in advance and Regards,

  34. Posted on: November 19, 2006 at 10:53PM

venugopalappu, I don't have any more access to drivers than those of you in the communuty.  What's available today on WU is what we have.  However, drivers are being updated and released everyday, so keep trying; I know it's now easier for our partners to release them more quickly now that WV has reached RTM.  I also have noticed that 64-bit drivers tend to be released after those for 32-bit systems, so you should keep that in mind.

WHERE do i go to download vista RTM?????

  36. Posted on: November 20, 2006 at 11:44AM

Hey andre1rocha:  if you're an MSDN or TechNet subscriber, you can go to one of those sites for the download (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/ or http://technet.microsoft.com/).

  37. Posted on: November 27, 2006 at 9:30AM

This is great. Got a chance to install and play with RC1 Business N edition available in our business licensing area. The voice cammand feature really worked well. The networking features were jam packed. install was easy especially with the Vista compatability wizard. Can't wait for the next stint.

Here's the million dollar question. How much of the Vista coding was actually done in India vs. USA? We all know how much Microsoft invests heavily in India. Just curious :)
